Letter never sent to The Austinist

The more things change, the more they stay the same? In some respects this is true. Every city has it’s chorus of curmudgeons, it’s chicken little’s, doom sayer’s and nay sayer’s. These folks are all ages, from all walks of life. When I moved here 20 years ago the “golden age grief” could be heard emanating “from the Highland Mall to the Capitol dome.” For some it was The Armadillo or The Nighthawk, Soap Creek, split rail, taco flats or whatever. Once the boom hit, for me it was The Chicago House, others grieved over Liberty Lunch. I really was disappointed when the 5% of actual voters voted to demolish The City Coliseum. But, I also voted for Kirk Watson, SOS, the council that implemented the compact city design, etc. I knew this city was going to boom. And, if managed well that boom would mean better things for most of us. And now some of my very best friends have come here from California, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Washington, NYC, etc. Austin is a transient city. Attraction and repulsion are dynamic engines of evolution. If we want to live in a city that does not grow and change, move to Utopia. Haha. Some other very dear friends have left town and lived happily ever after. Hell, even I have dreamed of it. But, I still like it here. And so do my native Austin kids. This is their city too. It is everyone’s city who chooses to make it their home. I got out of south Austin for personal reasons and came to Oak Hill. Lots of musicians have moved out here or San Marcos, Buda, Kyle etc. There is life outside of the Mopac/Ben White/183 semi-loop, especially if you have one of these here automobiles. Haha. My belief is that the constant infusion of wealth and creativity is going to lead us on the path to becoming one of the great cities of the nation or, dare I say world. I think we are a model of how to grow a city while conserving natural resources and nurturing the creative culture. It ain’t easy, but it ain’t bad.
